How To Train A Dog At Home – Do It Yourself Guide

How to train a dog at home so that it would be ever obedient to you as its master? While training and raising a dog is one of the greatest pleasures one could have as a dog lover, but the level of success and joy you would experience as a dog master would depend on how well you train your dog at home.

How to train a dog at home involves understanding the process of dog training itself. Dog training is where you teach your dog how to perform certain actions and behaviors based on your commands and instructions. While there are many various different ways on how dog training is done at home, they all primarily come to the same conclusion, revolving around positive encouragement, care, and reinforcement, while generally discouraging punishment. Dog training covers many different objectives, that is from basic obedience, all the way to security, law enforcement, helping the blind walk safely, and so on. For dog training at home, we shall focus more on basic obedience training, as this is something that dog owners can easily achieve in training their dogs in the convenience of one’s own home.

How to train a dog at home to be obedient to you basically revolves around a basic rule, which is that dogs are not able to figure out how to be ‘obedient’ to you on their own. They need to be trained in a way that they can understand, adapt, and eventually form as a habit. Most people would want their dogs to be trained to be well-behaved so that they are safe and pleasant to be around with, while also providing owners with a certain sense of security. So the way to go with training your dog is to reward good behavior, while just ignoring or correcting wrong behavior rather than punishing. So to begin with basic obedience training at home, you would probably want to train your dog to respond to some basic commands such as “Sit”, “Down”, “Up”, “Fetch”, “Heel”, “Go”, “Potty”, and so on.

How to train a dog at home begins by properly potty training your dog. Similarly, your dog would not know the right place to use as a toilet to begin with. So gently guide it in finding a suitable place, and stick to that same place. As far as possible, do not change your dog’s potty place if possible as this would only confuse it. There could be occasional slips and mistakes by your dog, so just be patient and give it time to accustom itself.

How to train a dog at home also entails feeding your dog on a regular schedule for both food and water. This would work hand-in-hand with its toilet training. To complete the house training of your dog, you would need to train it to tell you when it needs to go outside. Do this by hanging a little bell on a piece of string, attached to a door handle, and keep the bell around the same level as your dog’s nose. When you are bringing your dog to its potty, shake the bell a little to ring it, and say something like “potty time” or “go potty”. Keep doing this for about 2 weeks, then now try doing this same step, but without ringing the bell. See if your dog gives you a little nudge. If not, repeat patiently until your dog gets it. It would then ring the bell when it needs to go out.
